Bear Awakener herättelee meidän kaikkien sisällä asuvaa myyttistä metsäneläintä arkaaisen kansanmusiikin keinoin. Musiikki on moderneja sovituksia erityisesti Artturi Kanniston Siperian matkoillaan vuosina 1900-1906 fonografeille äänittämistä hantien ja mansien karhunpeijaislauluista. Hantit ja Mansit herättelivät karhua lauluin jokaisen peijaispäivän aamuna. Lauluissa on yhtäläisyyksiä suomalaisiin ja karjalaisiin karhun herättelylauluihin, joita laulettiin karhun pesän läheisyydessä. Myös karhunsyntymyytti on näille kansoille yhteinen. Tuomas Rounakari on tehnyt yhteistyötä hanti- ja mansitaiteilijoiden kanssa yli 20 vuotta. Yhdessä teatteriyhdistys Ruska Ensemblen kanssa hän on saanut työstään tunnustuksen Hanti-Mansian alkuperäiskansojen jaostolta.

The name Bear Awakener comes from specific songs sung in order to awaken the bear. This album dives deep into the bear myths and is designed to re-awaken or cherish anyones connection with this mythical entity. The myth of a bear’s origin is identical among the Finns and the indigenous Khanty and Mansi people in Siberia. Both cultures run ceremonial Bear feasts that last several days. Many songs, dances and plays are performed in honor of the bear. Tuomas Rounakari has studied the bear feast songs of all of these cultures and collaborated with Khanty and Mansi artists for over 20 years. Together with his theater group Ruska Ensemble, he has received an honorary mention on exemplary cultural exchange by the Assembly of North Indigenous Minorities in Khanty-Mansiysk.
